Mike Weatherly’s work tends to come in bunches, and the last few years have been especially fruitful for him.

“I seem to go in these big spurts,” he said. “I found a medium and a technique that has been really working well, so it just encourages me to produce.”

Elbow Lake residents will soon see the fruits of this latest spurt.

About 20 of Weatherly’s pieces will be on display in an exhibit at the Elbow Lake Public Library later this month. There is a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on April 24 at the Library to officially kick off Weatherly’s exhibit.

Weatherly is a printer and has been working with mixed media monoprints recently. Lines in monoprints can only be made once, unlike most printmaking, where there are multiple originals.

Mixed media monoprints feature a variety of different styles, including paint, ink or collage, among others.

His work has been more focused on figures and faces, ideas which Weatherly said have been focuses for artists since the beginning of art.

Weatherly has begun gathering steam in his career in the past year or so. He had a solo exhibit in Morris last spring, took part in a holiday exhibit in Elbow Lake this winter and now has his first solo show in the city.

Having the show in Elbow Lake, especially at the Public Library, is a thrill for Weatherly. Librarian Gail Hedstrom has always been supportive of the arts, and having this kind of champion of the arts makes Weatherly proud to display his works there.

“It’s great to have that support in the community and have a place to show,” he said. “It’s a really nice feeling to show in the community you live in.”

The upcoming exhibit will feature six or seven new pieces that Weatherly has completed in the last four months or so. He has begun incorporating digital prints into his work in the last few years, and has been pleased with the results.

Along with the exhibit, Weatherly will also be teaching a Kid’s Club class at the library in May on his style of printmaking.
