Artist Michael Weatherly explains the printmaking processes he used for different pieces, including linoleum and woodcuts, during an artists’ talk and reception Saturday. He hand colored the image of the man wearing a hat, pictured, after printing the black areas from a linoleum plate he carved. His pieces, along with three other printmakers’ are on exhibit at the Red Door Art Gallery and Museum in Wahpeton this month.

An artists’ talk and reception was held Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Red Door Art Gallery for four regional printmakers whose works are on exhibit through March.

Laura Youngbird, Phyllis Joos, Michael Weatherly and Eric A. Johnson all spoke about their printmaking processes and themes in an informal reception Saturday morning. Each artist explores different printmaking production processes, and several brought samples of pieces in progress as well as printmaking tools. Youngbird’s work incorporates collage and printmaking and her pieces are a series featuring dresses and patterns in natural colors, Weatherly designs his graphic pieces with help of a computer, Joos focuses on female themes and muted earthy tones and Johnson uses vivid color in his urban and natural-meshed landscapes.

The original pieces on exhibit are for sale as well as individual notecards featuring the artists’ work. All four artists admitted printmaking is an obsession, and spend as much time as they can on their art.
