I had the pleasure of meeting artist Michael Weatherly at the Nomad Pub last Tuesday for the opening of his solo show Figures and Faces: New Works. I was previously unaware of Weatherly, a printmaker and painter from the Elbow Lake area of Western Minnesota, and was pleased to find that his subtle work is poetic and at times heartbreaking.

This show consists of 14 recent works covering a wide range of printmaking techniques, from wood and linocuts to lithography, to the one of a kind techniques of stenciling and monoprint; and frequently mixes the media. As the name of this show suggests, Weatherly’s primary focus is on the figure that is often placed in a world of abstraction to intensify emotional content. His line work is strong and confident and contrasts clearly with the rich textures he frequently places his line over.

At times his forms are stylized, particularly in his woodcuts, making them akin to German Expressionism from the first half of the 20th century, and, at times, has all of the impact of that historic work.

Since Weatherly lives outside of the Metro area, this is a rare chance to see his work in the Twin Cities. So, be sure to take this opportunity to go down to the Nomad World Pub and take in these bveautiful prints over a beer or cocktail. The prices on his work are incredibly reasonable so you may want to walk home with one before he comes to his senses and raises them.
